From networking, to using social media, to having resumes ready and more, these job search tips will help you find a job as quickly as possible.

With the economy being what it is it seems as though more and more people are pounding the pavement and looking for jobs. Here are a few tips to make searching for a new job a little easier.

Basic Job Search Tips

Network – Like it or not, sometimes it's not about what you know but rather who you know. Anyone searching for a job should let any and all colleagues and associates, friends and family, and even casual acquaintances know they're on the hunt. It's important to recognize that many job openings are not advertised so sometimes the only way to find out about them is by networking.

Use Social Media – Job sites such as Workopolis and Monster as well as social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and particularly Linkedin can be great for getting information out to the masses. Job searchers should post resumes and network online as much as possible (as always, use caution when posting personal information on the internet, using only trusted sites and using the appropriate privacy settings).

Always Be Prepared – Have an up-to-date resume ready to send out at any given time (even when not looking for a job). Remember to tailor it a little bit to the job being applied for if applicable. Use the most relevant material and don't waste anyone's time with information that isn't useful. The best way to do this is to have a resume and cover letter template prepared that can quickly be altered and tailored when necessary.

Also have a professional email set up and make sure your voicemail system sounds professional. Potential employers are generally not impressed with cutesy voicemail and kitschy email addresses.

Seek Help and Advice – There are tons of free resources available on the Internet to help job searchers in their quest. Job sites like Workopolis in particular offer resume writing tips, job interview tips, advice on salary negotiations, and more.

Be Professional When Searching for a Job

One never knows when a potential employer will appear. Try to act in a professional manner as often as possible. Don't post offensive pictures or language to Facebook and Twitter accounts (even personal ones) because they can come back at the most inopportune times.

It's important to present oneself in a nice manner even when just running out to the grocery store or taking care of other errands. That's not to say that one needs to wear a suit and tie, but try to avoid wearing sloppy clothes and looking like a mess when leaving the house. Like it or not, first impressions count, and should an opportunity present itself at an unexpected time it's important to be confident and appear poised and as professional as possible.
