The outdated painting effects of the 90s are over and done with. To spruce up bland walls try one of these modern paint techniques.

There's no end to what can be done with a little paint, and walls lacking in pizzazz can quickly be livened up with a fresh coat. To keep things fresh and interesting, why not try something a little different than just a plain wall? Check out these modern painting techniques that will add wow to the walls.

Colour Blocking

Colour blocking is a popular painting technique that is coming back in style big time. It involves adding a graphic punch by painting large shapes such as squares or circles on the wall. It looks great in modern spaces and can be used to dress up an empty wall or highlight a piece of furniture or artwork.

The best way try colour blocking it is to figure out what kind of statement you want to make and where, and then draw it out on a piece of paper. Then draw out the shapes on the wall using a light pencil and outline it with painter's tape.

Paint the inside of the shape in a color that will compliment or contrast with the items in the room (depending on what look is desired). It's a great way to experiment with colour because it can be easily painted over later. Try pulling in a colour from another room, pulling a colour out a piece of artwork or area rug, or go for something completely bold and different.

Painting with Stencils

To really have fun with design why not try stenciling? It's a fabulous alternative to wallpaper and can be used all over the walls or just in specific places. There are tons of great, modern stencils available and the options are quite literally endless.

Stencils are perfect for places where a little drama or graphic element is desired. They work great as accents and focal points. When choosing a stencil it's best not to choose anything too intricate as the paint can bleed, but really, as long as you're careful you can do just about anything.

Adhere the stencil to the wall and apply the colour using a roller. The best way to stick the stencil to the wall is to use a light adhesive spray rather than tape. It will work best and is better for preventing bleeding. Also remember not to put too much paint on the roller at any one time. Too much paint will cause a mess and likely get under the stencil.

Paint is easy to apply and easy to cover of you decide you don't like it. Try to be adventurous and think outside the box. Plain walls can be boring so try something a little different. Paint techniques like colour blocking and stenciling are great ways to dress up boring walls, so consider these design ideas next time you need a change.
