If you're looking for window treatments but don't want to pay for custom work consider buying pre-made drapes.

When it comes to choosing curtains and drapes the options can seem overwhelming. The easiest option is to use pre-made drapes.

Choosing Window Drapes

The selection of pre-made drapes available in stores is huge. Consider the style of your room as well as your color preferences before buying. A modern room will look good with streamlined window treatments while more opulent rooms can handle heavier versions. Take these things into account.

Pre-made drapes are available with hooks, rod pockets and tabs so think about which version will suit the room and the window best. Tab curtains come in basic, hidden, button and grommet styles. They all have quite different looks so really explore the options before deciding.

Depending on how much privacy you want, it might also be a good idea to consider lined or insulated drapes. These will ensure maximum privacy and often come in ready-made designs.

Curtain Lengths

The average length of pre-made curtains is 96" but different ceiling and window heights will require curtains of different lengths. Some stores offer drapery panels that are 106" in length to accommodate taller windows, but if these aren't available there are still options. Try adding a custom touch by sewing a piece of a complimentary fabric to the bottom, or use a valence that runs across the top of the window to cheat the length a bit. If you decide to add extra fabric it's best not to try to make it match (it will be too difficult). A complimentary color that calls attention to itself will look much nicer.

Most drapes should skim the floor. It's the most common look and will suit modern and traditional spaces. Depending on the style of the room it might look nice if the drapes "puddle". This is where a certain amount of length is left to gather on the floor. Either way, it's always better to go longer than shorter.

Where to Purchase Curtains and Drapes

Pre-made curtains are readily available in department stores and home stores as well as fabric stores such as Invu (there's are made by the same designers who do custom work). Check out stores like HomeSense, Ikea and Home Outfitters or other home stores in your area. Shopping online also opens up a world of possibilities.

Window treatments do more than just dress up a window. Curtains and drapes along with shades and blinds provide privacy, filter light, and can add a great splash of color, style, and texture to a room. When purchasing ready-made window treatments make sure that they fulfill all of the needs of the room they'll be used in.
